LRU Overview
Long Range University exists for the specific purpose of helping you make quick ethical one shot kills in the field. The core of our content is contained in our L1, L2, and L3 classes which utilize a building block approach to provide education and training in every factor which impacts your lethal hit probability. Interwoven throughout all three classes is a training strategy which will improve your ability to function under pressure and significantly extend the range and conditions under which you can take an ethical shot. At Long Range University you will learn to recognize when the conditions are not suitable to ensure a lethal hit.
You will use our Gunwerks Shooting systems during the L1 and L2 classes, however what you learn will apply to any long range shooting system. Using a Gunwerks rifle system and ammunition for this course facilitates and accelerates the learning process. This allows you to focus on the core class content and leave equipment concerns to the instructor. Put wear and tear on our rifle not yours.
In our L3 class we encourage you to bring your personal rifle regardless of manufacturer. This is where you really learn the capability and limits of your “system” which includes you and your marksmanship ability, your rifles capability, your ballistic program, and your ability to compensate for wind and other environmental conditions, all in a realistic mountain hunting environment.

Our L1, L2, and L3 classes must be taken in sequential order and provide a comprehensive learning experience. We also offer “Clinics'' which are a deep dive into a specific topic or weapon system. There are no prerequisite classes to attend any of our Clinics.

Our Hunting Experiences
The ultimate in training is live field application. For the next step in your journey to proficiency, we offer several different training / hunting experiences with Gunwerks vetted outfitters in different environments. From Barbary Sheep in the mountains of West Texas, to beginner friendly Antelope in New Mexico, to freezer filling Cow Elk in Oregon, all provide a fantastic experience and help you achieve the next level of capability in the field.
Experience Overview
This event combines our 1.5 day Hunting prep class with 3 days of cow elk hunting with Opal Butte Outfitters at the Opal Butte Ranch in centeral Oregon. Our hunt prep class is custom tailored to the specific game and terrain you will be hunting and will improve your odds of success regardless of experience level.
- Fine tuning your shooting technique
- Confirming your 100 yard zero
- Confirming your long range ballistics by shooting targets out to your maximum comfortable range.
- Practice from shooting positions likely to be used in the terrain you will be hunting.
- Realistic scenario training tailored to the game and terrain you will be hunting
For the 3 day hunt, you will be partnered with another hunter and a professional guide. The terrain is rolling timber country which makes for easy hiking by elk hunting standards. There are numberous logging roads and side by sides will be used to access most areas of the ranch.
Meals are home cooked and will be served in the main lodge. You will share a heated cabin and a bathroom with another hunter.

- Hunting rifle / sling (suppressors are welcome and preferred)
- 80 rounds of ammunition, all of the same manufacturer, bullet type and weight. Ideally all the same lot #.
- Laser Rangefinder or means of accessing your long range data in the field
- Bipod and rear bag
- Cooler to transport your meat home or to a processor
- Hunting Pants

- Outer Shell Jacket (Insulated, Water and Wind resistant recommended)

Policies
General Policies
- All applicants for our training courses must be US citizens not legally barred from possessing firearms. For non-US citizens call us directly (307) 296-7300
- All event attendees must complete our liability and media waiver
Student Hunt Cancellation:
If you cancel a hunting event (other than an African hunt) more than one hundred twenty (120) days from the start of the hunt, your deposit can be moved to another class (not refundable). If canceled less than one hundred twenty (120) days from the start of the hunt, all payments toward the class are forfeited and non-refundable.
Gunwerks Cancellation:
In rare circumstances, Gunwerks may need to cancel a class. If this occurs, you will be notified as soon as possible and given the option of either a full refund or a move to another course of the same value. Gunwerks reserves the right to change or amend these policies at any time.
Deposit/Final Payment Schedule
- A $1500 deposit is required for reservation.
- Balance due 120 days prior to a hunt event to maintain your reservation - don't worry, we'll remind you when it's time!
